In fact, construction of the Panama Canal was based on some of the building techniques used for the Hennepin.  Before exploring the wonders at the park, stop in at the Visitor Center near Sheffield. There are several displays that help illustrate the canal's past, including tools used to build and operate it. At the time the canal was built, workers often made their own tools by hand. There's also a model of a lock with a boat going through it. Get a peek at the plant and animal life at the park through other displays at the center. The Red Covered Bridge

On Route 26, 1.5 miles North of Princeton, IL

Completed in 1864 for $3,148.47, the Red Covered Bridge is a one-lane timber truss structure. The bridge replaced a pontoon bridge that would flood during high water and force travelers to traverse the river. Oak and other lumber was shipped from Chicago to construct the bridge, one of about 200 bridges built in Illinois in the 19th century. When opened, the bridge was an important part of the Galena Trail carrying horse-drawn wagons and cattle between Peoria to Galena. The bridge posted a warning at each entrance for travelers which reads: “Five dollar fine for driving more than 12 horses or mule or cattle at one time or for leading any beast faster than a walk on or across this bridge.”  A 1963 state law requires the department to repair, maintain, operate, control and preserve every covered bridge in the state.

The Red Covered Bridge has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1975. The bridge has one distinction over the other covered bridges in Illinois: It is the only one open to traffic. According to the most recent statistics, the bridge accommodated an average of 275 vehicles a day.

The Barn Quilts of Bureau County

Find Locations Here

What was that flash of color high on that barn? You just caught a glimpse of one of the Barn Quilts of Bureau County. As you drive across the county pay close attention to the farms that you are passing. You may see one of the over 60 Barn Quilts that have been placed on farm buildings all over the county. “What’s a Barn Quilt?” you wonder. It is a quilt block design painted on a special type of plywood called MDO board. The blocks are usually either 4×4 feet or 8×8 feet. No fabric is used in the design, it all comes from paint. They are painted with exterior paint and each displays a colorful quilt block, either one chosen from a traditional quilt design or from something personal to that farm owner.

A small group of local women came together as a group that loves quilts and now the rich tradition of the barn quilts. They started the group, The Barn Quilts of Bureau County and they started out in 2014 with just five quilts in place. Early in 2016 they will have over 60 quilts on barns and farm buildings all over the county. The committee’s goal is to have barn quilts in all 25 townships in the county. Several of the townships have multiple quilts hanging already. The Quilt Trail was designed to celebrate our rich agricultural heritage, showcase our rural areas and promote agritourism, the arts and a sense of community pride in Bureau County. A barn quilt lends a homey feeling to a farm and is just another of the ways our community honors our agricultural roots.

The Cholera Cross

11601 S. Germantown Road
Breese, IL 62230

General Winfield Scott came to Illinois in 1832 with a force of 1,000 regulators in hopes of winning the Black Hawk War and making peace. Part of his force was struck with cholera when they arrived in Chicago. The disease spread throughout the countryside, carried by roving Native American's and the Army stragglers. This epidemic plagued Southern Illinois. The average was 10 people a day succumbed to the disease. The towns of Germantown, Breese and Carlyle in Clinton County had the most staggering death tolls.

It was during this time that Joe Altepeter, a farmer living north of Germantown, made a sacred pledge to God. Altepeter asked his Lord to spare his family and if that happened, he promised to erect a perpetual memorial in the form of a large cross on his farm so that all could see his faith. Joe Altepeter went to the woodlot and hewed out timbers for a large cross. He mounted it near the roadway in front of his home, facing the rising sun. On the cross he inscribed the words in German "Im Kreutz ist Heil" "In the Cross is Salvation".

When Altepeter died, his son and then grandson took over the farm. From there, a brother-in-law with the last name of Timmermann took over the farm. Each generation has made the solemn oath to continue taking care of the cross to show how that family was spared.

When one cross has decayed, a new one has been formed and replaced. No one knows how many times the new crosses have been replaced but the current cross is made of concrete and stands 25 feet tall in the exact same spot the very first cross was erected all those years ago.

Marsh Harvester Historical Marker

403 Edward Street
Sycamore, IL 60178

An agricultural boom in the 1850s and the resulting increase in production created a need for machinery. In 1857, the Marsh brothers, Charles W. and William W., observed the Mann reaper in action on their farm. While watching, they had the idea of binding grain on the machine rather than in the field.

The brothers spend the next year testing their idea and developing the elements of the machine. A patent was applied for in June 1858. Production of the new harvester began for the 1860 fall harvest. These machines were largely unsuccessful.

William Marsh spent the winter of 1860-1861 improving the machine, successfully harvesting over 400 acres during the next three seasons. In 1863, the Marsh Harvester machine was manufactured in Plano, Illinois. By 1866, manufacturing extended to Rockford, Illinois and Springfield, Ohio. By 1869, the main manufacturing plant was located in Sycamore, Illinois.

The Marsh Harvester transformed agricultural practices: - The harvester was more successful at reducing labor and the expens of harvest than any of the reapers. - The harvester set the foundation for the attachment of the automatic binder.

Macoupin County Courthouse

201 E. Main Street
Carlinville, IL 62626

The historic, nearly century-and-a-half-old courthouse that stands today is one of the largest in the country, according to its website.

Before the Civil War, Abraham Lincoln represented a number of his clients at the Macoupin County Courthouse, 201 E. Main St. However, the building used by Lincoln was torn down in 1867 and replaced with the one that stands today.

Construction of the new courthouse lasted three years. Because it cost more than $1.34 million to build, the courthouse earned the nickname the "Million Dollar Courthouse." It still serves as the seat of county government and is also a place for Route 66 tourists to visit.

Macoupin County "Cannonball" Jail

205 E. 1st Street
Carlinville, IL 62626

Built in 1867, using the “cannon ball” method, which stopped jailbreaks by making it nearly impossible to remove the blocks to make an escape, this unique medieval inspired fortress housed many law-breakers during its 119 year history. The Macoupin County Jail is said to look more like a fortress than a small town jail. It’s Gothic Revival design features a scalloped parapet, which served as home to the sheriff and his family.

Completed in 1869, just a few years after the end of the Civil War, Meyers incorporated a unique design feature; each stone was hallowed out at the ends and surplus cannonballs were placed between the stones. The cell block’s ceiling, walls, and floors were constructed of one-inch iron plates with 20 inches of solid stone above and below. This made escape by removing sections of the stone wall a virtual impossibility.

The jail was originally designed to hold 17 prisoners but at times saw twice that many, and lacked any of the amenities found in modern facilities. Since its retirement in 1988, the jail has been a popular tourist attraction and can be toured April - October from 9 AM - 4 PM daily.

In 1917, World War I caused a coal shortage and Standard Oil of Indiana needed a dependable supply of coal to power their oil refineries. They found it in Carlinville and opened two mines, one on the northeast edge of Carlinville and the other eight miles outside town. Hundreds of miners, along with their families, came to Carlinville to work in the new mines. The town’s population grew by a third, almost overnight, causing a housing crisis. To solve the problem, Standard Oil turned to an unusual source for quick, permanent housing – the Sears and Roebuck catalog.

Construction of Sears Kit Homes purchased from the Sears & Roebuck catalogue circa 1918.

From 1908 to 1940, Sears and Roebuck Company offered 450 different models of ready-to-assemble kit homes. The average kit home had 30,000 parts – nails and screws included. All lumber was precut, no sawing required and all parts were numbered and keyed to a blueprint. Nine different models in the “Modest” variety – 5 or 6 rooms on two floors – were selected for Carlinville, ranging in price from $3,000 to $4,000. Standard Oil placed an order for 156 of these mail-order homes. Because of the size of Standard Oil’s order, Sears and Roebuck Company named one of their models the “Carlin” after the city of Carlinville. Page our of Sears & Roebuck Catalogue advertising The Carlin model of their kit homes. This model was names for the city of Carlinville because of the size of the Standard Oil of Indiana’s order.

Within one year, all 156 Sears houses had been erected and an entire new neighborhood – Standard Addition was added to Carlinville. Thus becoming the largest concentrated collection of Sears catalog homes in the world. Today, 150 of the original homes still stand.

Route 66 Turkey Tracks

26618-27306 Donaldson Road
Girard, IL 62640

During the laying of the original cement for the road in the 1920's a bunch of mischievous wild turkeys apparently decided that fresh cement was just too tempting to leave undisturbed, making this little spot on the Mother Road a sort of turkey walk of fame with their footprints permanently embedded in it.

These world famous "Turkey Tracks" are outlined in white and can be found by going not quite 2 miles west of Nilwood and watching for the Route 66 direction sign where you turn south onto Donaldson Rd. Coming from the west the tracks are about 0.3 miles north of Allen Rd. Thankfully the road builders and all later maintenance workers saw the uniqueness of this and left the tracks in place to be enjoyed by future travelers.

Five Point Park, Ayer Street
Harvard, IL 60033

Harmilda the Cow has been the symbol of Harvard's annual Milk Day (Har-Mil-Da, get it?) since 1966. She stands at the "y" intersection of two downtown streets.

A mural of cows in a farm pasture serves as a pastoral background. The plaque underneath Harmilda still touts Harvard's civic claim, "The Milk Center of the World." Milk Days is the longest running annual festival (now a multi-day event) in Illinois. The town crowns a fresh Milk Day Queen every year. Milk Festival is typically held the first weekend in June.

Krause Elk Farm

8311 Saint Leos Road
Evansville, IL 62242

Our family loves the rural life so to stay in touch with nature, the adventure to move to raising elk seemed to be a fascinating and educational one. I was raised on the farm that has been in our family for more than 125 years. We started out growing the usual crops and livestock that most farms had back then.

Today the herd consists of 40 - 55 bulls, over 35 breeding cows along with 20 - 30 calves each year all which live on 55 acres of fenced in pastures. Together we run the elk farm and educate the public about elk and their products by giving tours and hosting an open house. ElkFest, our open house, is held once a year on the first full weekend in June. To this day, we are still learning about new products and avenues that elk have to offer.

Our family invites you to come learn more about these majestic animals. Take an educational and fun tour of our property and hear for yourself the familiar bugling sound of the elk. While here you can learn about all the benefits we get from these animals' velvet antlers. In addition to this, please also view the home décor, unique crafts, and more that we have in our country store.

Trace Road

Olney, IL (passes through)

The most prominent early line of travel across southern Illinois and southern Indiana was the Buffalo Trace, also called the "Vincennes Trace," "Clarksville Trace," and Lan-an-zo-ki-mi-wi," etc. It entered Indiana from Kentucky at the Falls of the Ohio, passed in a northwesterly direction and left Indiana at Vincennes, and branched out throughout Illinois. Route 50 through follows much of this ancient route first traveled by giant herds of bison. It is thought that the road came through Olney following what is now Main Street. As you travel through the town look out for the famous albino squirrels that make Olney their home and look for colorful murals that tell about other aspects of Richland County history!

This building was where redtop seed was cleaned, bagged, and sold. Redtop (Agrostis gigantea) was once a crop grown throughout Richland County. Before extensive use of fertilizers, the acidic, damp soils of the area weren’t suited for growing many crops. Redtop was grown for the seed, which was sold, but was also a valuable forage for the horses and donkeys that worked on the farm. As new methods of farming were introduced, fertilizers, tiling, tractors instead of horses or donkeys, redtop fell from favor as a crop and was eventually replaced with corn and soybeans.

Passenger and mail service also linked Wyoming with the rest of the country. By 1875 the C,B, & Q was shipping significant quantities of freight from Wyoming. For the year ending March 31, 1875, the total freight was 296,446 pounds of way freight, 728 cars of grain, 114 cars of stock, and one car of hay generating a total of $25,478.55 in railroad revenue.
